Homer Simpson uses tabbed browsing

A note from the author (me): After reading comments like this, this (which is pretty rational), and most of all, this (which I’ll admit got me a little agitated), I’d like to emphasize the original point of this post: Homer uses a web browser with tabbed browsing. Does it mean tabbed browsing is the best thing since sliced bread? Maybe, maybe not (I think it’s pretty awesome though). Does Internet Explorer have tabbed browsing? The answer is a resounding NO. Can Internet Explorer be modified via a 3rd-party program so that there is tabbed browsing? Sure. For that you should take a look at Maxthon, AvantBrowser, CrazyBrowser, MyIE2, Slim Browser, and many other similar products.

I just watched the latest episode of The Simpsons and guess what? Homer uses a web browser with tabbed browsing!

A scene in The Simpsons Season 15 Episode 5 where Homer uses a browser with tabbed browsing

It could be the Mozilla Suite, Firefox, Opera, or <insert browser that supports tabbed browsing here>, but it sure ain’t Internet Explorer.

Since someone commented about my media player, I’d like to point out that I use Media Player Classic, which happens to be an Open Source product. It’s Sourceforge project page is at http://sourceforge.net/projects/guliverkli/, but you’d do better to check out Neil Turner’s writeup instead. I hate Windows Media Player for its bloatedness, clunkiness and its tendency to be totally unhelpful or even go bust when required codecs aren’t there.

Homer Simpson uses tabbed browsing, therefore you should get a Homer Simpson mask when you use Firefox. You can find all kinds of Halloween costumes online to suit your favorite pop culture characters, like cartoons or even an Easter Bunny costume!

It’s not Mozilla suite nor Netscape, because it has a search field next to the URL bar (Seamonkey has search in the seidebar).

But you forgot to mention Safari and Camino.

But looking at image in http://www.mozilla.org/products/mozilla1.x/ it does have something that looks like the small search bar. (If that’s what it is, I’m too lazy to install and find out)

The html title is centered and not left-aligned. Could he be on Linux then? wow.

I doubt it’s Safari. Look at the tabs - they’re too white and not rectangular enough. Those tabs look a lot more like isosceles trapezoids.

From the window decoration, I would actually guess that it’s closest to Linux

It’s Safari.. obviously a Simpsons / animated version of it, but look at the style of the buttons (specifically the Aquatic shading), the search bar, the upper left as has been mentioned before. I don’t think it matters that Safari wasn’t released for version of Mac before OS X… you can’t expect 100% consistency on a minor detail in a Simpsons cartoon.

Also, couldn’t it be that it’s just a mix of “browser-like” features, and all of the good browsers now have tabs? I know when drawing something simple like a browser, I sort of throw together my impressions of the subject, and don’t necessarily try to do a pixel-by-pixel copy. :)

I am using BT. Well, OK I think I kinda get what Patrick meant. In fact, there was just a thread downloading on TV shows over at SitePoint forums.

Well, I do get my fix of South Park and Drawn Together via BitTorrent, and recently The Simpsons. It’s probably illegal but it is the only way for fans like me who are not the US to get to watch the latest episodes. The South Park creators themselves don’t mind (though it still doesn’t mean it is then legal).

Best fit is Netscape 7.0 on Mac OS Classic. Note the four buttons at the left (Back, Forward, Reload, Stop) match the default Netscape 7.0 setup. Also, the style of the Location bar is very much like Netscape 7.0 Modern (the whole area is outlined) with an Internet Keywords dropdown to the left (Netscape 7.0 was the last version to feature such a dropdown) and a Search button to the right. The browser tab is also very Modern style (though the icon on the left looks more like a Safari close tab button than a site icon).

Compare to http://help.powerup.com.au/help/win9598/netscape7/ img/ns7_main.gif.

Didn’t this surface a while back? It’s probably not even supposed to be a specific browser anyway.

It could be any of the myriad tabbed IE-based browsers, tho: Maxthon, Slimbrowser, AvantBrowser, and CrazyBrowser all pop to mind.

There are dozens of em on Windows marketplace.

They’re usually extremely customizable too (to make it look that simplistic).

I don’t think there is anything wrong with downloading the newest episodes to your computer. What’s the difference with that and recording them onto a tape? As long as you do not sell the recording you, by law, are not doing anything wrong. Fox has released only up to season 4 and there are 11 more to go, it took them almost 7 yrs. to get those out, it will take them a lot longer to get the others out.

Note the cartoon drawing and the fact Homer Simpson lives in a 2D world, which is fictional and not real therefore any “real” browsers thrown into the mix are incompatible as its an instance only browser - meaning its created once and thrown away after approx 40 frames have passed.

You got it all wrong !

We all know that Homer is a litle bit … lets just say he’s not Albert Einstein so clearly it cannot be any kind of *nix.

We also know that his salary doesnt make him a multimillionaire, so we can be sure that he cant afford a Mac system !

So all that is left are Window’s based browsers, since were talking about tabbed browsing we can exclude IE, since MyIE is rather new, we can say thats its Mozilla or Opera !

Finally .. Since we all know that Homer isn’t all that into Operas, although Marge is, we can safely say thats he’s using *hint*MOE*hint*zilla/Netscape

Cheers,
Daniel

I don’t really approve of the practice, that’s all. Where the difference is, from what Stephan said, is distribution. If you record it for your own private viewing, that is one thing… making copies available for mass distribution is another. That is what is wrong. While I sympathize with you not being able to watch new episodes… that isn’t an excuse and it doesn’t give you the right. Neither does “Fox takes too long for the DVDs, I don’t want to wait!” It just doesn’t. That is why I am disappointed. But, it seems you may not have known it was wrong, so its not that big a deal. I don’t think you’d knowingly do it.

The sad thing is that it’ll stay up, most likely. This is a trend… a lot of people just don’t care about the property of others. I guess you’d have to have someone steal, copy, distribute and mess with your stuff to fully appreciate it. People like to try to take advantage of the communities I run - my property and sweat and tears - all the time, so I am very hardened to this type of thing.

Patrick,

I think the difference though, is the fact that not everyone has a TV tuner video card in their PC and no one is making a profit by disitributing these episodes. So, there really is no harm. Now, there are people who get these episodes and use something like DVD Shrink to make a DVD compilation of them and sell them which is wrong, because in the long run it does affect the sales of Fox.

I have friends that used to rent movies, watch them, and then copy them to a blank videocassette. Is that wrong? They weren’t selling the copies, just making a single one for their viewing. I think the whole Digital Rights Management issue is still a very touchy thing that has not been defined very well by the government.

I have episodes from seasons 10, 11, 12, and 13. I don’t give them to anybody but I like to watch them from time to time. I did not obtain them by recording them but from a friend. He did not sell them to me. Does that make it right? I don’t know. I know that when those seasons come out on DVD I will buy them anyway because I want to be able to get the features of the DVD and watch them on my television.

Stephen,

Plenty of people would agree with you. There is no harm, no one is profiting. To me, that doesn’t matter. Just because someone is not profiting off of something, that doesn’t make it less wrong. If someone copies my logo and throws it on their non-profit website, is that cool? No, its not. More than not cool, it is unethical and despicable. Besides, this does affect Fox long term. If you can download every episode, why wait for the DVD at all? Forget DVDs, we don’t need to buy them, we can just download every episode we want! In fact, Fox doesn’t need our money - they’re just an evil corporation! I’m the average working man who is scraping together a living - I DESERVE IT!!! (I know that’s exagerating and that’s not you, but there are people out there like that…) You say you will buy the DVDs and I believe you, but there is more to it then that, for me. Copies of a program are not to be distributed without permission from the property owner of the program. That is what I respect above all else.

Yes, what your friends did was wrong. For example, if you buy a CD, you now own one license of each song on that CD for you any of your personal listening pleasure. Burn the songs and listen to them on your PC and your iPod. Don’t distribute them. If you rent, you are doing just that - renting, a temporary situation. You can view it for as long as your rental period is current. If you rent a movie for 5 days, you can view it for 5 days, for example. Making copies to view beyond that 5 days is what makes it wrong. If you want to view the movie beyond that, rent it again or buy (a single household license, in essence) of that movie. If people make a copy or two of that and give it to their mother and brother, that’s not a big deal. But, when someone is making copies and sending to more than a couple of people (bunches of family, friends, even people they don’t know that well), that is pretty bad, in my opinion.

Just an FYI: You can Tab Browse in IE, I do all the time. The solution is MyIE2 (do a search for it), basically a new front end that uses the IE engine and crap.
While I agree IE sucks (or should I say blows since it freely breathes out security flaws), I must use it for many of my work applications (online databases that will error out or not work properly in anything but IE).

That being said, Homer ain’t using MyIE2, unless he has a custom skin and has a very good modder to change up most everything. (Lisa?)

It’s pretty obvious to me, that it’s MacOS pre X (9.2.2 or older) - look at the pinstripe grey topbar with close button on the left.

The browser itself.. well, it isn’t Safari.. that wouldn’t work under classic and it doesn’t have a blue top-area. My guess would be a mixup of several browsers and environments. The computer doesn’t exacly go for a powermac, anyway.

The poster knowingly didn’t mention the maxhton browser, which is based on IE and uses tabbed browsing. Another one is netscape which is also based on IE.

The author of the blog is just a Microsoft basher, nothing serious here. Certainly it could be Internet Explorer via Maxhton or any other browser which uses Internet Explorer.

Jin: Of course I didn’t mention Maxthon. Maxthon is NOT IE. C’mon I’m sick of posts like this trying to make me sound like a self-righteous Microsoft-bashing zealot. The point I am trying to make is that Homer uses TABBED BROWSING. Does Internet Explorer have tabbed browsing? The answer is a resounding NO. Can Internet Explorer be modified via a 3rd-party program so that there is tabbed browsing? Sure. For that you should take a look at Maxthon, CrazyBrowser, MyIE2, Slim Browser, and many other similar products.

Oh, and “Netscape based on IE”? All I can say is, “really?”. Of course my face will be looking real scrunched up trying to give you the most incredulous look I can make.

Sick, but partially true. The latest (currently beta) version of Netscape is the usual AOL monster. Its based on Firefox (and old version and I really hope that they bring it upto date before leaving the beta stage), but has a “Render like IE” option which reloads the current document using an ActiveX control that implements the IE rendering engine.

Firefox Rules (Again)
Those who have read this blog before will know that I am a dedicated supporter of Firefox as an alternative to Internet Explorer, and it’s not just because I want to appear leet in front of my friends. I don’t think I need to list the most important …

When I saw the picture at the top of this page I instantly recognized it as the browser I am forced to use at my internship, which is Netscape 7 running on Mac OS 9. Netscape 7 on Mac OS9 has all the elements that are in the picture. The OS9 look of the window, the four circle buttons on the top left part of the browser, and tabbed browsing with the tabs displayed on the top.

All you need to do is think about who created this animation and what kind of a computer he/she is probably using. Got it? :-)

That’s not a tab…it’s just a blob of white-out to erase something I typed earlier.

Hm… errr…

It doen’t look like a mac? Well… let me say it this way, there is no question: The computer homer simpson uses in the scenery is definately a mac. Don’t look at the finder (desktop), just look at the keyboard. The switch-off-button on the left side of the keyboard (single button left up) is typically for a series of mac-computers…

regards.

Ora sappiamo che anche Homer non usa Explorer, ma un browser con navigazione a schede(cliccate qui per vedere l’immagine zoomata). ;-)Volete restare solo voi ad usare ancora IE?

Tabbed Browser
It seems that after the Mozilla Firefox browser release, tabbed browsing issue becomes more popular. Even they were arguing about the tabbed browser Homer Simpson uses.

It has to be mozilla. Theres only 5 buttons to the left of the address bar just like in mozilla. And the little search bar to the right of the address bar. Plus tabbed browsing. I’m 99.9% sure that it might be it.

Initially I thought SeaMonkey but after comparing screenshots I’m pretty sure it is Camino–if you look really carefully all the buttons are right too–the first arrow is more shadowy than the second one but they are arrows and the other buttons look right. Not sure how it being Camino works with it being an MacOS 9 look.

This post is meant simply for the person that said “Another one is netscape which is also based on IE.” Are you kidding me. You actually go to sleep at night thinking that IE and Netscape are based on the same rendering engine? Are you truly that stupid or did you just hit your head before you wrote that. Please, go back to pumping gas and leave the thinking to those that are equipped to do it. What a moron…

Not Mozilla, because there is one tab.
And if you have one tab in Mozilla, it’s without tabs.

Too bad about all the negative comments - I think it’s a pretty funny discussion, so that’s the entertainment value right there.
I don’t know if anyone else noticed, but maybe more distracting is that he has a computer with 5 1/4″ drives on it. Lisa probably took an old clone and put Linux on it. C’mon, she’s been like 8 years old for 10 years - she has to have had the time.
And having Homer Simpson endorse the activity - isn’t that more of a strike against tabbed browsing? His catch-line is “d’oh!” after all.
