Looking for hosting

I’m on the hunt for a good webhosting package. I’m having some problems (technical and political) with the current one on the dedicated server I’m sharing. If any of you have any recommendations, do let me know by leaving a comment or writing me.

These are my requirements:
500MB storage
25GB transfer (at least)
Unlimited databases
Unlimited subdomains
Unlimited email accounts
Multiple domains (on a single hosting plan)

I’m thinking of getting a Virtual Private Server (VPS) solution and have been taking a look at some User Mode Linux (UML) hosting plans. In particular, Dinix and VPS Colo (I’m looking at their lowest priced plans) stand out after much searching and reading over at WebHostingTalk forums. $35/month isn’t something I can afford though. If anyone wants to share the plan with me (we can split it 50-50 or whatever), do let me know. I’m a very nice trustworthy guy (honest!).

UML == root access. Mmmm… I can finally get the stuff (Subversion, PostgreSQL, mod_python) I want installed.

I use Relio.com and am very happy with the service. I host many websites on the same account.

I’m really grooving on Textdrive. It’s run by some very smart people and does some stuff that isn’t easy to come by in a shared environment.

Support is absolutely top notch.

I use TWSites.com they are very reliable. I am not sure they have the UML features and stuff but you should definitely talk to them, you might be able to work something out. I know they can give ssh accounts and stuff. The big plan with all the stuff pretty much unlimited is less than $24 USD. If decide to use them please let me know because they offer a program where I can get a discount on my site for referring somebody.

The same question was asked by a host of the TechTV show, The Screensavers. He got over 200 comments regarding the hosts that his readers use and it was pretty interesting.

It gave me some ideas for when my plan is up, so I hope that you will find it useful as well.

I’d recommend taking a look at Hard Hat Hosting. They’ve been nothing but spectacular for both my business and personal needs. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me (via my blog).

This service isn’t bad, its really cheap!
for $3.95 CAN (Bronze) a month you get
5GB Data and 40GB Bandwidth

and for $7.95 CAN (Silver) a month you get
10GB Data and 80GB Bandwidth

MySQL is only offered on the Silver package.

I use AddAction.net which is big on features and also quite affordable. The US$6.95 basic plan meets your 500MB requirement, though with ‘only’ 20GB of bandwidth. Right now you can go for either the ‘first 6 months free’ offer, or the ‘pay one year upfront and forever pay lower rates’ offer.

Just how many email addresses, databases and subdomains do you need? They’ve given me extra databases upon request without extra charge, although that was off the record. You can also check out the other plans/reseller accounts.

If you plan on signing up, I’ll shamelessly plug my affiliate link here! :)

I’ve had lots of success with Linode’s UML products http://www.linode.com/products/linodes.cfm. Starts at $20/mo.

Had you considered that if you optimised your html/rss then you could decrease the bandwidth you use. I don’t get many hits (a few hundred a day), and I saved quite a large amount of bandwidth.

dreamhost.com is simply the best. I signed there on Hixie’s advice and never regretted it. Mozilla Europe signed there on my advice and they love it. Let me know if you sign with them, there’s a referral program.

Try Tengun Networks. They have very low prices, however they restrict SSH and Telnet access. Good luck!
