And it isn’t a good idea. When your computer is slow and/or the page is loading slowly and/or the program is slow and you want to abort the page load, clicking the stop button can have no visible effect. So you click it again, thereby queuing up a command to reload the page.

Only to a nerd with a perfect system on a T1 (i.e., to Mr. Spock) are stop and reload two sides of the same coin.

Yeah, Safari does this. I prefer the placement in safari too (right-aligned in the URL bar).

I'd be surprised if this feature makes it into Firefox 3.6, actually. That version is in release candidate stage and very close to release:

http://browsersphere.com/2010/01/09/firefox-3-6-rc1-released/

Since this was only very recently checked in to the trunk:

http://www.squarefree.com/burningedge/2010/01/12/2010-01-12-trunk-builds/

I'd say it's highly likely this won't show up until Firefox 3.7.

I don't know when this was introduced in Safari, but I can't remember of a Opera version in which these buttons are distincts (I use Opera as my main browser since 5.12).
