I think this tool is a great first cut. I'm disappointed that the Google folks didn't throw in firefox/thunderbird support from the start though - we are their biggest supporters. I expect to see this in the initial release 1.0 version, however. For now, this beta is miles better than the microsoft indexing service (if you're still running this service - get rid of it! - right-click My Computer...Manage. Then Open the Services choice on the left. Look for the "Indexing Service" in the display panel, double click it...and set the properties to "Disable"---stop it while you're there too.

I want to like it but the current file format support is terrible. Not even PDF? I'd like to see it read MP3 (and other audio files if possible) metadata, Thunderbird email (standard mbox format I think) and MSN Messenger history. And a local image search would be nice.

Kind of defeats the purpose of trying to keep something hidden, if one look at the preferences tells you what folders aren't being indexed.

I haven't used it personally yet, but I've heard from those that have that Google Desktop will not run if you have antivirus software running. In today's virus laden, adware-rich environment I'd have to say that will pretty much keep me from using it until things change.
