Rails, Firefox, Anime, Mac – Still working on the blog theme!
In: Neat Stuff
15 Oct 2004The newest, coolest, next big thing from Google: Google Desktop indexes your files, emails (Outlook and Outlook Express only though), MS Office documents, and AOL IM chat history. And it really does work and that so much better than the slow (accidentally hitting F3 is no fun) and lousy Search function that comes with Windows. Download it, install it, try it out and pull out the F3 key from your keyboard with your teaspoon.

Oh, and if you’re trying to hide bootleg software/music/porn in obscure locations, remember to tell Google Desktop “Don’t Search These Items” so none of that comes up at the least opportune moments (like when your girlfriend is looking over your shoulder).

Will it see Firefox bookmarks or Thunderbird e-mails and index them, too?

I haven’t used it personally yet, but I’ve heard from those that have that Google Desktop will not run if you have antivirus software running. In today’s virus laden, adware-rich environment I’d have to say that will pretty much keep me from using it until things change.

Kind of defeats the purpose of trying to keep something hidden, if one look at the preferences tells you what folders aren’t being indexed.

Don’t know where this conflict with virus-checkers thing is coming from, but I have AVG and Google Desktop Search works fine.

I want to like it but the current file format support is terrible. Not even PDF? I’d like to see it read MP3 (and other audio files if possible) metadata, Thunderbird email (standard mbox format I think) and MSN Messenger history. And a local image search would be nice.

I think this tool is a great first cut. I’m disappointed that the Google folks didn’t throw in firefox/thunderbird support from the start though – we are their biggest supporters. I expect to see this in the initial release 1.0 version, however. For now, this beta is miles better than the microsoft indexing service (if you’re still running this service – get rid of it! – right-click My Computer…Manage. Then Open the Services choice on the left. Look for the “Indexing Service” in the display panel, double click it…and set the properties to “Disable”—stop it while you’re there too.
