hey!

use this howto!

www.high5.net - full mailserver running postfix, and courier-imap
with virtual users, and domains - very good for high end mailserver

also, slap mailscanner and spamassassin + clamav on there and youll have a mailserver with spam and virus protection in no time!
also look into mailwatch with is a php fronend for mailscanner

hope this helps. email me if you have questions

Upgraded to PHP5 yesterday. All seems well, except for my Tasks setup (the free version) which broke (expectedly, since the developer Alex King is well aware of this).

Hmm, I tried to post a comment earlier but strange funky things happened; every single blog entry was just a list of the most recent ones. But things seem normal now.

Though perhaps it is a moot issue presently, I went with qmail as my first after hearing about its excellent security. This guide was excellent. I actually find qmail easier to use than postfix, but postfix is more mainstream and it could be just that I was just used to qmail. There may be an equivalent for postfix, but qmail has a nice web-based interface for creating and managing email accounts called qmailadmin that is quite convenient, as well.

I initially wanted to but was afraid that some web applications won't run properly. And I more urgently wanted to put out a working site on the new server so went the "easy" way out ;).

Expect PHP5 in the near future though, now that I've got most of the basic services up and running smoothly.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I've got Postfix and courier-imap running now. Not an ideal setup yet, but functional at the moment.

Karl: I got the Linode 64 plan (the cheapest). There has been 1 occasion where the server load went absurbly high and basically freezed the services that were running. I'm not sure if that's my fault or somebody elses sharing the same box. Other than that, I'm pretty much satisfied with it. It seems faster (in terms of the network and the CPU performance) than the other hosts I've been with - granted, all were shared hosting except the last one being a shared-dedicated hybrid.

I'll probably need to run on my Linode a few more weeks before I can say anything concrete.

Which VPS plan did you choose, and are you satisfied with the performance? I've been thinking about signing up for a VPS, but I'm just not sure about what a Contention Ratio of 40:1 or 30:1 actually comes down to in real performance.

Advice on MTA/LDA:
You're a beginner, so go with postfix.

Here's the short overview:
- sendmail is obsolete, don't waste your time on it
- postfix is mainstream and recommended for newbies - start here.
- exim is the exot. if you feel uncomfortable with postfix you may want to give it a try.
- qmail is the "big iron". if you need a mail-system that scales up to millions of messages per day you'll be using qmail.

Have fun.
