There'll be a warning that 'is:' won't give any results, but that's a lie-to-children. This way all new mail gets the label _unread in the inbox, but top it off with a nice color (or not). If you try to create a label named "Unread" it gives a notification saying that system names are not allowed. You can, however, still find all unread messages by running a search with "label:unread". They actually implemented the label system so that when it caught you creating such a label, it used a filter for you without cluttering the filter list. "Sweet!"
